Michelle Stevens

Name: Michelle (Pelisek) Stevens
Hometown: Spirit Lake, IA

Major: Horticulture
Graduated Date: December 2000

Employer: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, GA
Job Title: Nursery Tech

Major Job Responsibilities:
Most of my time is spent working with the plant material in and around the clubhouse. I am responsible for the installation and maintenance of the annuals that are planted in the shape of the map of the United States - the prestigious and historic Masters Tournament symbol. We utilize three crops - mums, pansies, and marigolds. Everything that is done throughout the year on the grounds is geared towards the Masters Golf Tournament. Sometimes we have to prune plants at the wrong time, because of the tournament. We also have a very extensive fertilizer and pesticide program.

What I like most about my job:
The high demand for perfection. I have always been a very detail-oriented person, so I fit in well here. I also love being outside and the wide range of duties that I am given. I'm also provided the opportunity to make many decisions when it comes to the maintenance practices associated with the greenhouse and annual planting. It is very rewarding to see your work on national television!

Advice to current students:
My advice to current students is become as well-rounded as possible. Employers like to have employees that have a wide range of experiences. Also, use the knowledge of your advisors to find good internships. While you are doing your internship, make the most of it. Don't just go through the motions. Ask questions and try to be involved with as many projects as possible.
