Job Title and Company:

Dairy Herdsperson/Herd Manager
Rivard Farms
Daggett, Michigan

Major Job Responsibilities:

As the herd manager of our dairy, I oversee all employees and the daily chores that need to be accomplished in order to make our operation run smoothly. In addition to managing the herd, I also fulfill the herdsperson responsibilities that tie into the overall short and long term health of the dairy cows including the replacement heifers. The majority of my day is spent completing daily tasks and overcoming situational obstacles. In general, my tasks can range from working hands-on with the animals, fixing equipment, working with the herd veterinarian, or basic bookkeeping.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy most the responsibilities and obligations that come with the cows. I feel that both of these aspects have benefited my personal growth and helped me attain a comfortable lifestyle for my family. Although my position demands much of my time, it also offers flexibility for raising a young family. Another point about my job that I especially like is that every day is different, meaning that my work life is never mundane.

What advice would you give to current students pursuing a career in Agriculture?

The advice that I would give current students pursuing a career in Agriculture is to persevere in an area that you enjoy. There are many career opportunities in this field that you may be qualified for so choose the one that you would enjoy doing the most. Also, select one that would offer you the opportunity to go the farthest. Once given a small opportunity to succeed, it's up to you to “take it and run.” I have found that because I like doing what I am doing, I can easily give 110% when it comes to meeting the job's demands.
