Describe your internship responsibilities:
My responsibilities included meeting with farmers and landowners to
discuss erosion problems, possible solutions, and ultimately developing
a conservation plan that addressed the erosion problems. I also was
provided the opportunity to assist in the survey, design, and
construction of numerous erosion control structures such as grass
waterways and water and sediment control basins.
What did you enjoy most about this internship?
I enjoyed getting the opportunity to use what I have learned during my
college career out in the field in real life situations. I also enjoyed
getting to know the farmers and landowners I worked with. It was a
great opportunity to learn about the differences in agriculture between
Iowa and Indiana.
How has this experience impacted your future career plans?
My internship experience confirmed that this is the type of work that I
want to do after I graduate. I really enjoyed using my professional
knowledge to help farmers and landowners manage their land in a way that
is economically profitable for them yet still environmentally
responsible.
What resources did you utilize to obtain this internship?
I utilized Agriculture and Life Sciences Career Services a great deal.
Mike Gaul helped me polish my resume before the Career Fair, where I met
contacts that connected me with this internship possibility.
What advice would you offer to other students seeking similar
internships?
Network with as many people possible in your area of interest. It
really pays off to take a few minutes to show them how interested you
are. If you make a positive impression, they may remember you for many
years when they come across an opportunity in your area of interest.
